Female Joe Mannix?
When I think of Joe's skills, some important ones seem (stereotypically) to
be either more "feminine" or more "masculine" but most are neither. I
therefore imagine that had different parameters been fed into the Intertect
computers a different card might have popped out on which was printed the
name of one of Joe's female co-workers. However as fellow Intertect
employees I would expect them to have more in common than not.
If I was a Hollywood TV mogul that's exactly how I would do it. I would
remake Mannix in the style of the first season, and if it did well I would
come out with completely different movies based on other Intertect agents.
(07JUL02 16:12).
The Mannix-style skills that come to mind:
--great body - (is that a skill or a personality characteristic? Hmmm..)
--able to get the conversation going.
--good listener; good at spotting liars.
--direct (more of a style than a skill but a big reason why I like Mannix)
--strong stomach; can be cold as ice but is always controlled.
--skilled with weapons.
--gentle and kind to people who deserve it - can figure out right away which
ones do and don't.
--good at fighting, escaping, driving, taking a bullet or a punch, cooking,
swimming, fixing things, shooting pool, getting girls to twirl around in the
park for you, great dresser, etc.
--always has a hot date.
I have no reason to doubt that a female Joe Mannix would be excellent! (Not
saying there haven't been female detectives, I'm talking someone with a lot
of Joe's qualities.) I probably am not yet ready for it to be a guy twirling
around in the park. How about her boyfriend du jour is a football coach and
she single-handedly dumps the Gatorade bucket on him after the winning game?
Then he goes on the road and you never see him again? How about another week
her boyfriend is a guy who's not terribly bright but he's gorgeous, a great
fighter, and has a good heart? Too bad he's so stupid! And of course old
flames could pop up from time to time. Next week she likes the guy but he's
intimidated by her skillz? And some weeks just a lot of flirting and getting
the job done.

Subject: Re: [Mannix] Female Joe Mannix?
Hey all,
Sorry to have been AWOL through one of my favorite episode discussions
(Huntdown). I think it is the best of the Intertect era, but then, that's
my
own take. Did anyone mention the slip-up in this one? When Joe finally
awakens from his stupor, he grabs Violet by the arms and you can see a
cigarette butt between the fingers of his left hand. It's so quick they
probably figured no one would notice - especially since there was no
rewind
in those days!
As for the cast, they did that kind of thing a lot in TV in those days.
They
would just put plaster around a shoe. Pretty lame, but acuracy was never
big
back then. I think someone here mentioned how quickly they churned shows
out
and took liberties with the small stuff. I too wondered how he got those
pants on and off over that thing! Would have liked to stick around to find
out! (tee hee).
Catching up on my very (very) many emails, I caught the mini-discussion
about a woman doing a job like Joe's. If you gals think a woman isn't up
to
it, I suggest you check out the books by Sue Grafton and Sara Paretsky.
They
both write detective mysteries and their detective is a woman. They
stories
are great and you will see just how well a woman can do in the business.
You'll really enjoy them - especially Grafton. She's my fave. All of her
books atart with a letter of the alphabet ("A is for Alibi", "B is for
Burgler", etc.) and she is now up to "Q" now. Her character lives in a
medium small town in California. Paretsky's character lives in Chicago and
the stories are a little more gritty. But she has some good ones too. And
if
you saw the movie made a few years ago from one of her books (starring
Kathleen Turner) don't let that cloud your opinion - the movie was AWFUL.
Anyway, do try them. They both make great summer reads.
Well, looks like I have some chatching up to do!
See you all later!
